Julian Treasure is a ‘sound expert’ and the chair of ‘Sound Agency’. He looks at how sound affects our daily experience and how he advises businesses and organisations on how to best use it.
In this 10mn Ted talk, he explains, with hard figures as convincers, why architects need to use their ears as well as their eyes.. Too often, buildings are designed with space in mind but without any consideration for sound.
‘Noise levels in hospital have doubled in the past few years’ he says. As a consequence, the rate of dispensing errors has Schools, increased as well. Sleep is absolutely crucial to recovery and healing, but many times, acoustics do not allow for that..
In many schools, children can’t hear clearly what teachers say. They have to work extra hard to ‘connect the dots and understand what’s going on.’ A 32 billion pounds flagship academy school was designed on an open space plan, like a corporate headquarter. Architects had to go back and put back the walls in, at a cost of 600,000 pounds.
Noises in offices, in classrooms, in hospitals in our cities, and pretty much everywhere else, directly affect our lives, although most of the time, outside of our awareness.
“It’s about designing, not appearance, but experience, so that we have spaces that sound as good as they look, that are fit for purpose, that improve our quality of life, our health and well being, our social behavior and our productivity” says Treasure.
Designing for Experience is exactly what we do in NLP. When we favour one sense to the detriment of others, it has consequences on our daily life and the environment we live in. With NLP we learn to become attuned to ALL our senses, not just one, and we learn to develop the flexibility to use them all for more effectiveness and ultimately creating better lives.
